Congress President. A laparoscopic and endocrine surgery specialist and the pioneer of transoral thyroidectomy — the “father” of the Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA). He reported the world’s largest series of transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy via the vestibular approach (first published in 2015), now numbering more than 6,000 cases, and continues to be interested in transoral parathyroidectomy and endoscopic neck surgery.

A board-certified endocrine surgeon and Professor of Surgery. He serves as Chief of Endocrine Surgery at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and is a national leader in transoral (scarless) endocrine surgery for thyroid and parathyroid disease. Dr. Grogan is also the founder and principal investigator of the North American Thyroid Cancer Survivorship Study, focusing on long-term quality of life in thyroid cancer patients.

Associate Professor of Surgery in the Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery, specialising in endoscopic and robotic thyroid surgery. He has performed over 200 transoral robotic thyroidectomy cases using the pre-mandibular technique — one of the largest such series worldwide — and is one of the most renowned surgeons in intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM).

He offers general adult and paediatric ENT services with specialist head-and-neck training, and is the only local surgeon offering coblator intracapsular tonsillectomy and transnasal oesophagoscopy. A high-volume thyroid and parathyroid surgeon, he led the team that performed the United Kingdom’s first “scar-less” thyroid and parathyroid procedures (Transoral Endoscopic Thyroid/Parathyroid Vestibular Approach).

Specialises in surgery for thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal gland tumours, as well as endocrine and gastrointestinal malignancies, with a special interest in laparoscopic and minimally invasive endocrine surgery. He earned his medical degree at UCSF and completed his residency in surgery and fellowship in endocrine surgery there. He is a past president of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and of the San Francisco Surgical Society, and president of the American College of Surgeons (Northern California chapter). He has been a professor at UCSF since 1988, is listed in Best Doctors in America and is board certified in surgery.

Originally from Barcelona, he completed his university education in 2001 and relocated to Switzerland in 2004 for surgical training. He specialises in general and endocrine surgery and is a pioneer of transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy in Switzerland and other European countries. His current interest focuses on the use of indocyanine green (ICG) in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, on which he has conducted and published extensive research.

A pioneer of robotic retroauricular neck dissection for thyroid and head-and-neck cancer, with substantial contributions to the development of minimally invasive head-and-neck and thyroid surgery via the retroauricular approach. He has authored more than 100 original articles and book chapters on endoscopic and robotic thyroid and head-and-neck surgery, holds the largest worldwide experience with robotic retroauricular neck dissection, and was the first surgeon globally to perform transoral robotic thyroidectomy using the da Vinci SP.
